Irma Hernández Torres, Ph.D.

Irma Hernández Torres is Bernard Lonergan Professor of Theology. She is a native of Puerto Rico and is Professor of Theology at the University of the Sacred Heart in San Juan. She holds a B.A. degree in psychology from the University of the Sacred Heart and earned a Diploma in French Language and Culture from the Institut Catholique de Paris. She spent several years working among Indian peasants in Mexico and did further work in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Ecuador. For five years she taught at a Marianist high school in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. She earned her master’s degree in religious education on a full scholarship from Boston College in 1987 and has taught at the University of the Sacred Heart ever since, serving for a time as head of the Humanities Department. In 2001, Dr. Hernández Torres was appointed full Professor of Theology. She is an adjunct faculty member at the Dominican Center of Studies in the Caribbean in Puerto Rico and at the Interdiocesan Seminary St. John the Baptist. She holds the Doctor of Ministry and the Doctor of Philosophy from the Graduate Theological Foundation. Dr. Hernández Torres is also Director of the International Theological Institute in Puerto Rico (ITIPRI). She is a member of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States and has been named coordinator of AMERINDIA (Association for the Reflection of Latin-American Theology) for Puerto Rico.
