TCH 536 Catholicism and Religious Freedom

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course examines the development of the Catholic Church’s teaching on religious freedom. Special emphasis is given to the major themes of Dignitatis humanae, “The Declaration on Religious Freedom” of Vatican II, the context in which it was written, the important input of John Courtney Murray, S.J., and contemporary reflections on the Church’s teaching. Adequate time will also be given to the legacy of John Paul II, Benedict XVI’s 2011 Message for the Celebration of the World Day for Peace, “Religious Freedom, The Path to Peace,” Pope Francis’ thought on religious freedom, and current case studies.
