Logotherapy and Existential Analysis – Interventions
FACULTY: Maria Marshall, PhD (profile) and Edward Marshall, MD, PhD (profile)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course builds on the previous concepts introduced to expand students’ understanding of logotherapeutic case formulation. Considerations regarding the (1) initial dialogue; (2) the middle dialogue, the (3) closing dialogue and the (4) follow up phase are discussed. Maladaptive patterns and attitudes are discussed, with a case illustration that integrates “mind” and “heart” (rationality and meaning). The logotherapy process prepares for the presentation of logotherapy’s main methods: (1) paradoxical intention, (2) de-reflection and (3) modification of attitudes. Lukas’ book “Meaningful Living” provides helpful illustrations.
It presents the narrative aspects of logotherapy, its use of keywords, careful differentiation, naïve questioning, use of symbols and metaphors, illustrating meaning-possibilities, and logotherapy’s “workhorse” the Socratic Dialogue. “Keeping the flame of hope alive” in the logotherapeutic dialogue is illustrated with examples. Several other logotherapeutic methods are described and illustrated, such as: Autogenic training, Logo-drama, Values-exercise, Frankl’s Mountain-range Exercise, the Life-review, and Life-preview exercise, Guided Autobiography, the Logo-anchor Technique, Guided Discovery of Meaning Potentials, Logotherapeutic Dream Analysis, The Appealing Technique, Awe-some meditations, The Method of Common Denominators, Self-transcendent Questions for Couples, Literature as Therapy method, Art in therapy, Music, Photography, Virtual Interventions, The “Ecce Homo” method.
